CJP Afridi summons JCP meeting on Nov 5 to discuss judges’ nomination for constitutional benches
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has called the first meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) for November 5, 2024, aiming to discuss crucial nominations for the Supreme Court’s constitutional benches.
The meeting, scheduled to be held at 2 PM at the Supreme Court building, will not only deliberate on these appointments but also consider establishing a secretariat for the commission and address any other urgent matters brought up with the Chief Justice’s permission.
This development follows key legislative changes, particularly the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which mandates the inclusion of five members of Parliament in the JCP to ensure broader oversight and balanced representation.
The National Assembly Speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, finalized and submitted these nominations to the Supreme Court after discussions with Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and other parliamentary groups. The selected members include four parliamentarians from both government and opposition factions, alongside a female member, Roshan Khursheed Bharucha, from Balochistan.
The nominations and the overall composition of the JCP reflect a commitment to equitable representation, balancing the interests of different political groups while also including gender and regional diversity. The JCP, under the leadership of
CJP Afridi, will play a significant role in shaping the future of Pakistan's judiciary, evaluating judges' performances, and ensuring the efficiency of judicial operations in high courts and the Supreme Court.
